GenAI Black Belt Program Components

The 5-Star Approach delivers the GenAI Black Belt Certification Program, a rigorous six-month (24-week) training and coaching initiative designed to cultivate deep GenAI expertise within the Participant's organization, or across the organizations they serve. The Program is designed on the foundation of behavioral psychology, to give you the best possible chance of success. It includes:

  1. Expert-led weekly 1-hour class sessions: During these class sessions you have the opportunity to present your project work to fellow students (all under strict NDAs), gather feedback, troubleshooting and support. The instructor then presents the assignment for the next week, and answers questions about how students plan to use the assignment to drive their business (or their clients’ businesses) through the next step in their AI Transformation.

  2. Structured weekly assignments (required): As mentioned above, each of these assignments is designed to broaden your skills while delivering immediate value to your business. These may include creating proposals for GenAI work projects, Custom GPTs, impact analysis, change management, automation using computer vision, advanced prompt engineering, automated video creation, and advanced GenAI agents (i.e. agentic workflows). Large projects that don’t fit within a week may be counted in chunks, as long as you can demonstrate how you delivered additional value to the customer each week.

  3. Office Hours: Each week, we hold an office hour so you can bring your questions and concerns, hear other student’s questions, and see additional demos. This is also an acceptable place to nerd out on superintelligence and muse about the broadly emerging economic impacts of AI.

  4. Weekly 1-1 Coaching: We offer this as a resource to each student. When you need extra help, please set up an appointment with your instructor to get it.

  5. Accountability Partner: Each student is assigned an accountability partner. Your accountability partner is there to help you understand assignments, give encouragement, help you get unstuck, and find resources inside and outside of the course offerings. It is recommended that you meet once or twice per month for at least 5 to 10 minutes to briefly discuss assignments, lessons learned, and share inspiration. Being a great accountability partner will help prepare you as you emerge as a “Trusted AI Transformation Advisor.”

  6. Continuous Improvement: We don’t comply with higher education’s regulatory bodies that force curriculum submittals two years in advance; lagging behind the cutting edge. Instead, we are the cutting edge, guiding you through the latest organizational strategies, GenAI tools, features, and prompt engineering techniques. When there’s a newer, better tool available, we want to evaluate whether we should be teaching it.

  7. We Offer Flexibility: We have realized that sometimes a class assignment isn’t relevant to a student’s immediate business needs. In this case, we want the student to take latitude to build something of the caliber we are covering in class, in whatever method, means, or ends that serves them best. The course isn’t about passing arbitrary, coercive tests. It’s about providing the structure, mentorship, community, and resources where you can develop deep GenAI expertise.

  8. Labor Resources: In the spirit of flexibly meeting your business and career goals, if it works better for you to commission and oversee an application assignment (to the benefit of your business), you may hire someone else to do the work (for example, an instructor, a fellow student, or someone from our extensive network).

GenAI Black Belt Program Expectations

  1. Weekly Goals: Research indicates that when you as the learner have the lion’s share of the onus of accountability, you do your best work. Research also suggests that people who write down their goals are far more likely to achieve them. Each student will grow in different ways to meet their own unique career goals. The biggest long term opportunity we can offer is to grow into the role of “Trusted AI Transformation Advisor.” Solutionists compete. Trusted advisors rise above.

  2. Assignments and Presentations: Do the work! As your instructors come to class prepared each week, so will you. Consistently doing real-world work to apply what you learn, and present it in class, is what makes this program so much more valuable than all others. Complete the weekly application assignments and presentations. If unforeseen circumstances arise, notify the instructor in advance to arrange a short leave from your obligations.

  3. Post on LinkedIn: About the value you created with GenAI. This is critical to build your personal brand as a Trusted AI Advisor. Your brand is the most powerful marketing and sales tool you can possibly build. It is what people say about you when you are not in the room. As your brand grows to indicate you have highly valuable skills and should be trusted and highly paid for your experience-based advice, people will seek you out and pay you accordingly. Your brand grows as you do great work for clients, and as you talk about that value online. To be clear, this is not a post about how big of a fan you are about AI. This is a post about how you used it to create value, how you advised a business leader, or how you oversaw a project that delivered results.

  4. Fill In Accountability Survey Weekly: Honestly fill this out each week. This represents the value you create through everything you learn in the program. Learning is worthless until it is converted into value for an organization. 100% of the value of this experience is in applying what you learned to create value for others.

  5. Seeking and Offering Support: Ask for help when needed, and be available to support your peers. Reach out to your instructor, mentor, accountability partner, or GenAI for help. If you didn’t get the consistent help you needed, that’s because you didn’t ask for it enough. Your instructor is available for 1-1 coaching sessions, which have been proven as the most effective learning strategy across many scientific studies. Your feedback is also valuable to help build the program to meet the needs of students like you. Ask for help.

  6. Time Commitment: Dedicate 4 hours per week to inside and outside of class learning. Bring your best self fully to weekly cohort sessions, sharing the value you've contributed to your organization with GenAI. Your return on your investment will largely occur in experimenting, building, implementing innovative GenAI solutions, and in sharing the value you are creating. At times you will need to research alternative solutions that are not provided in class. This is a critical skill of any Trusted AI Advisor.
